We have carpenter ants munching on our garage. At night you can see a line of them stretching 30 feet or so, going from the garage, along the driveway, and out to a pine tree in the woods.
They seem disinterested in the bait stations that I put out about a week ago, which really has me confused. I started shopping around for another way to kill 'em, and I came across a website that said sometimes carpenter ants want sugar, and sometimes they want protein. The bait stations contain a sugary liquid.
Do they want protein? I took a few pieces of leftover chicken outside and placed them in their path. I also put a 3 inch round pool of honey in their path, too. Within 5 minutes they were crawling all over the chicken! They had no interest in the honey. So they want protein, not sugar. I just bought some protein baits and put in for the 2 day shipping because the weather is getting cold quickly. At some point, they will decide that it is too cold and retreat into the wood, where they will be hard to treat.
